Harry Newell was born in Weeting on 21st August 1890.

In October 1910 Harry joined the Royal Navy and was quickly posted to HMS Juno as an Officer's Steward 2nd Class.

In August 1911 Harry was transferred back to the shore training establishment in Portsmouth "HMS Victory 1". After some time here, and at Weymouth, he was discharged as unfit on 19 November 1912.

The Thetford and Watton Times of Saturday September 19th 1914 recorded both Harry and his brother Edward as being in the Essex Regiment.

Private 14165 H Newell was discharged from the Essex regiment on 2nd November 1915 as no longer physically fir for militry service. He was awarded the 1915 Star, the Victory medal and British Wa Medal
