Thomas Shadwell

Thomas Shadwell

Thomas Shadwell was born, probably at Bromehill Manor, in 1642. After schooling at Bury St Edmunds and Caius College, Cambridge he went to London to study law.

Rather than law, his interests turned to the stage and he penned some 13 comedies and an opera based on Shakespeare's "The Tempest". He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1689, but died only 3 years later. Much of his work is now forgotten, but has not been lost.

Indiana University has published many restoration comedies on their website: English Prose Drama

You can read about Thomas Shadwell , and other notable characters from the village's past in the book "Weeting Worthies". Copies are available from the group - please visit our sales page.
